Traditioanl (Rod/Plate) Earthing

Traditioanl (Rod/Plate) Earthing

There are various types of earthing system depends on the standards, use and the soil condition. In Bangladesh we are mainly using Rod earthing, Plate earthing and the other accepted method. Here we will discuss about some common earthing system.

Description

Rod Earthing: In this system a copper made earthing rod or earth-electrode buried in the ground. The copper rod need to buried as deep that. The copper rod should be buried deep enough to reach the moist soil. The size of the copper rod depends on the fault current of the circuit or as describe in the standard or guideline. The Bangladesh National Building Code BNBC (V2020) suggest the minimum size of earth rod is 12.5 mm in diameter and the length of the rod is not less than 3.3 meter. Multiple copper rod earth electrodes may have to be installed to achieve an acceptable value of earthing resistance of around 1 ohm.

Plate Earthing : Plate earthing are also very popular earthing system. Copper made earthing plate need to buried under the ground level. BNBC 2020 suggests a 6mm thick copper plate with 600X600 mm-square size. The plate must buried at least 2 meter to the ground level. Charcoal and other grounding enhancement materials may use to reduce the earth resistance. Multiple Copper plate earth electrodes may have to be installed to achieve an acceptable value of earthing resistance of around 1 ohm.

Grid Earthing:  Grid earthing is recommended for the site where large amount of earthing system are required. In a grid earthing multiple number of copper rod or bar are buried under the soil and connected each other by strip or wire to make the earthing grid. Exothermic or compression method can be used for the connections.
