Description
A Surge Protection Devices (SPD) is an electrical device that is used to protect equipment against power surges and voltage spikes while blocking voltage over a safe threshold. Without a SPD, can create component issues, as permanent damage, reduced lifespan of internal devices, burned wires and data loss.
A SPD is usually installed in LT Switchgear (Class B), Electrical Distribution System (Class C) and communications structures, process control systems, other substantial industrialized systems (Class D).
The SPD Types described below are in accordance (paraphrased from) with UL 1449 Third Edition.
Type-1 SPDs: Surge Protection Device Type-1 (LT Switchgear, DB, 10/350μs current wave)
Permanently connected, hard-wired SPDs intended for installation between the secondary of the service transformer and the line side of the main service equipment over current protective device, as well as the load side of the main service equipment. Type 1 SPD is characterized by a 10/350μs current wave.
